Materials for CU Planning Seminar
A 2008 goal of the OCUL Small Credit Union Success Committee was to develop a set of modules small credit unions could use for planning seminars.  The materials consist of a Credit Union Planning Seminar Guide for the credit union and  facilitator to use to conduct the seminar.  It has information about planning, how to set up the seminar, and step-by-step instructions with time lines and handout materials to conduct the seminar.  The second module is the Credit Union Planning Participant Notebook which can be downloaded and printed off for each participant.  It can be customized by taking pages from the third module, the Credit Union Planning Forms Guide. Used together, the credit union can do a first-time planning seminar or, if they are experienced, customize it for their needs. A list of experienced facilitators is found in the beginning of the Forms Guide. The Seminar Guide is a .pdf file but the Participant Handbook and Forms Guides are in Microsoft Word 97-2003 so that those modules can be customized by each credit union.  It is the Committee’s hope that small credit unions will take advantage of this opportunity to do planning and answer one of the regulators most asked questions, “Where are you going in the future?”  Along with the Ohio Credit Union Foundation’s ability to fund the facilitator fee, Ohio's small credit unions should have everything they need to plan for the future.

Free Small CU Staff Salary Survey
A new, free resource is available to Ohio’s smaller credit unions thanks to the Ohio Credit Union League’s Small Credit Union Success Task Force. The Small Credit Union Staff Salary Survey, produced annually by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), will be provided at no cost to Ohio credit unions with assets of $35 million or less. The 100-page survey provides a comprehensive compensation analysis featuring data on dozens of full-time and part-time credit union positions including base salaries, incentives, bonuses, total cash compensation, and salary ranges for the most common positions. The report details results by asset size, region, number of full-time employees, number of services offered, number of members, and total amount of outstanding loans. The League negotiated with CUNA to purchase distribution rights so the survey is available at no cost to League-affiliated credit unions with assets of $35 million or less – a total savings of nearly $19,000 for the 274 “smaller” credit unions.

What is a Small Credit Union?
There is some debate in the credit union movement as to how to define a "small credit union." The Ohio Credit Union League generally considers credit unions with less than $20 million in assets as a Small Credit Union, but the information listed on this page are presented for any affiliated credit union that has limited resources and is working to develop its services and products.

Traditionally, half of Ohio's credit unions have been classified as small credit unions. Though more and more, smaller credit unions are merging into larger credit unions, small credit unions continue to play  important roles in the Ohio Credit Union Movement, in the Ohio Credit Union League, and in Ohio's communities.

League benefits for small credit unions
Small credit unions affiliated with the Ohio Credit Union League receive many benefits in addition to the services we provide for all credit unions, including:

  • Education Discounts -- A 50% discount off the full affiliated price of education sessions, seminars, and conferences sponsored by the Ohio Credit Union League, OCUL Services Corp., and the Ohio Credit Union Foundation. Some exclusions may occur.
  • Convention Discounts -- A 50% small credit union discount off the Ohio Credit Union System ZENITH for up to three people.
  • CPD Webinar Discounts -- Credit unions under $10 million in assets receive a $50 discount on all CUNA Center for Professional Development (CPD) Webinars.
  • Mentoring Opportunities -- The Ohio League can pair your credit union with a larger credit union to assist you in developing products and services for your members. Under this mentorship, staff from the larger credit union will act as consultants and mentors.
  • Small Credit Union Workshops -- The Ohio League and CUNA facilitate workshops throughout the year to provide networking and idea-sharing opportunities for managers, staff, and directors of small credit unions.
