International Credit Union Day 2006
October 19, 2006

On Thursday, October 19, more than 157 million credit union members worldwide will celebrate International Credit Union Day.

Read a International Holiday Greeting from Ohio Credit Union League President Paul Mercer and from U.S. President George W. Bush.

This year's official theme, "Credit Unions: Making a World of Difference." illustrates the unique role credit unions play in the lives of their members. Bring members, staff, volunteers, sponsor groups and the community together to make this year's celebration the best yet.

For 56 years, credit unions have set aside the third Thursday in October to celebrate International Credit Union Day. Each year, it gives us an opportunity to remember our proud history as we promote understanding and support for the credit union difference.

In 1848, Freidrich Raiffeisen, the mayor of Flammersfeld, Germany, conceived of the idea for a credit union to help ease the distress of farmers suffering from the famine that had struck his district. Today, credit unions are part of a worldwide movement. The World Council of Credit Unions represents 40,258 credit unions in 94 countries around the globe. In the United States, 9,484 credit unions serve 85 million members. In Ohio, 535 credit union serve 2.8 million members.

Look for special ICU Day sections in major Ohio newspapers
Three chapters of the Ohio Credit Union League will promote credit unions in special sections in the Dayton Daily News, The Toledo Free Press and Columbus Business First newspapers the week of Oct. 16-20, 2006. The Miami Valley Chapter is publishing an insert in the Dayton Daily News and the Central Ohio Chapter will publish a tabloid inside Business First of Columbus.

Miami Valley Chapter offers free ‘perks’
to celebrate International CU Day
In celebration of International Credit Union Day, the Miami Valley Chapter is sponsoring free coffee at all Boston Stoker coffee shop locations the morning of Oct. 20. Chapter credit union employees will be present at all five Boston Stoker locations and will educate the community residents about the benefits of credit union membership while they enjoy their complimentary coffee. Chapter credit unions CODE CU, Day Air CU, DayMet CU, Dayton Firefighters FCU, FirstDay Financial CU, River Valley CU, Standard Register FCU, Universal 1 CU, and Wright-Patt CU are participating in the promotion. Boston Stoker stores are located in Springboro, Centerville, downtown Dayton, Englewood, and on the University of Dayton campus.

Ohio CU Food Drive to collect food for your local food banks
The Ohio Credit Union League is working with the chapters to conduct a statewide food drive during October and we encourage you to participate. The food collected by your Chapter and its credit unions should remain in your communities to benefit those in need locally. A box is all you need. We provide printable posters. Find more information here.

Media Sweets Week will promote CUs at media outlets
Credit unions leaders from 14 of the 15 chapters are delivering 390 Media Sweets Week bags – a record number – to more than 200 local newspapers, radio stations, and TV stations throughout the state during International Credit Union Week. Leaders from the Butler County, Central Ohio, Cleveland, Lake Erie, Mahoning Valley, Miami Valley, North Central, Northeast, Northwest, Ohio Valley, South Central, Stark County, Summit, and Western Buckeye Chapters volunteered to deliver the bags filled with sweet treats and information to educate local print and broadcast journalists about credit unions. The free gift bags, provided by the Ohio Credit Union League, include candy bars with custom wrappers with information about Ohio credit unions, a press release about International CU Day, and additional materials promoting the credit union difference. “Many thanks to the more than 55 credit union leaders who are taking time out of their busy schedules to deliver the Media Sweets Week bags to promote the credit union industry,” said League Public Relations Manager Katie Walton. “It is because of these volunteers, many of whom volunteer year after year, that this program is so successful.”
