Philosophy and convenience combined in Shared Branching
In the financial services industry, convenience is paramount to success. The credit union difference and philosophy are important, but convenience is a necessity to gain real traction among members and non-members. Fortunately, Shared Branching is the perfect balance of both.

Finding a business partner is now easier than ever. The Ohio Credit Union League’s Virtual Expo Hall is now available in a version for mobile handheld devices, such as BlackBerry and iPhone.

Partnership brings Corporate One FCU members greater services
Corporate One Federal Credit Union and PSCU Financial Services have partnered to offer more than 800 member credit unions access to PSCU's credit and debit processing platforms. As more consumers turn to the Internet for product information, comparison shopping, and purchasing, CUNA Mutual Group (CMG) is making it easier to shop for auto and homeowners’ insurance. eLUMINATION SPECIAL FEATURES
Get Thinking:
A new niche for CUs: The “creative class”
Often, small businesses are considered a niche market. In fact, small businesses are anything but a minor segment of the business world. As of September 2008, there were an estimated 27.2 million small businesses in the U.S. that employ roughly half of the nation’s private workforce, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Dividing the nation’s abundant small business population reveals true marketplace niches, which present opportunities for credit unions to provide tailored products and services for the organizations and their employees.

Best Practice:
First-ever “CU Family Enrichment Center” a community cornerstone
Doors to the Marion Community Credit Union Family Enrichment Center opened to local residents in May – the first credit union-sponsored outreach center of its kind in Ohio. The Family Enrichment Center hosts financial education programs for children and families, in addition to a wide range of other community services, such as after-school and summer programming for youth and family-strengthening classes for adults.

LEGISLATIVE & REGULATORY NEWS

Compliance Alert: CUs sued over improper ATM disclosures
During the past week, numerous Ohio financial institutions, including credit unions, have been sued for lack of proper fee notices on ATMs. Institutions named in the class-action suit are widespread and include Pennsylvania and Ohio. All credit unions owning ATMs are advised to immediately review Regulation E’s ATM disclosure requirements and ensure that proper signage is posted, advises Dave Shoup, VP of Regulatory Affairs for the Ohio Credit Union League.

League continues protecting CU, consumer interests in credit card legislation
A bill to regulate credit card marketing on college campuses (HB 12) was passed by the Ohio House of Representatives, and is awaiting action by the Senate. The Ohio Credit Union League worked diligently with the bill sponsor and other interested parties to protect the interests of credit unions that serve universities and their students. The League is also addressing the impact the recently-passed federal legislation, Credit Card Act of 2009, may have on young consumers.

CUs escape largely unaffected by proposed reg. reform package
President Barack Obama last week unveiled details of his long-anticipated Financial Regulation Reform package. The two elements of most interest to credit unions: Continuation of an independent regulator for credit unions, and a proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency to oversee consumer products, including mortgages and credit cards.

Cleveland CU leaders educate legislators on CUs’ importance
Leaders from the Cleveland Chapter and Ohio Credit Union League held a legislative dialogue at The Ohio Educational Credit Union in Cleveland to discuss the state budget, Ohio’s economy, the housing and foreclosures crisis, and credit union initiatives.

Ohio update: S.A.F.E. Act deadline nears
