General Info on .Coop Internet domain names

View a list Ohio credit unions that have registered for .Coop names

More than 1,000 credit unions throughout the United States have purchased more than 1,500 .coop web and e-mail addresses, known as Internet domain names. .Coop joins .com and .org on the web, but is available only to credit unions and other types of cooperatives.

From now until the end of September, dotCoop, the registry for the .coop domain, offers .coop names for just $80 per name per year, with a two year minimum registration at the www.coop registration site. But on October 1, however, new registrars will begin offering .coop name sales and prices may change. To get the guaranteed price of $80, credit unions need to buy their names before September 30 by going to www.cuna.coop and clicking on the orange .coop logo.

Reclaim Your Names
Register for all the domain names your credit union needs for a strong online presence but which weren’t available under .com.  Because .coop is available for use by only credit unions and cooperatives, it gives your credit union a better chance of registering all the memorable, meaningful names you wanted, but couldn’t get under other domains.

Differentiate Your Credit Union
New top-level domains reserved for specific types of businesses are fast becoming the best way for businesses to stand out on the Internet amid a sea of .coms.   Of the seven new domain names recently approved, six are reserved for use by specific types of businesses or people.  With .coop -- one of the six specialized names – you can use your Internet extension to set your credit union apart from investor-owned banks.

Add Value to Your Web Site
Specialized domain names also enhance the value of your web names by instantly telling users – in just four letters – that your credit union is a cooperative, owned and governed by its members.  Other specialized domain names, like .gov and .edu, provide legitimacy and credibility to the information on the web site, since users know that strict criteria are applied to anyone using these restricted domain names in their web addresses.  Use .coop to give peace of mind to users on your site.

Gain a Competitive Edge
Help consumers find the businesses they trust online.  Extensive market research shows that consumers trust and prefer to do business with credit unions and cooperatives.  Use .coop help consumers and members find your credit union online.  Tell them you’re not just another .com and gain a competitive edge over investor-owned banks!

Get Meaningful, Memorable Names
Register for short ,memorable names that reflect your image, values, products and services.  Some credit unions have purchased names like mycreditunion.coop, premier.coop, unbank.coop,   Under .com, most simple English words have already been taken and there are no three-letter names available.  Under .coop, the sky is still the limit.  So be creative and register names that reflect what your credit union is all about.

Increase Traffic to Your Site
Register multiple .coop domain names and use them all to point to your web site. You don’t have to give up your .com name.  You can point both .coop and .com addresses to your home page.  Using many names under different domains to point to the same site is a time-tested way to help consumers get to your site, even if they can’t remember your exact address.  .Coop gives credit unions an exclusive domain name that will help consumers find them on the web.

Serve Your Members
Use .coop for your members-only web site and remind your members about the value of cooperation.  Your  members-only site can be a great place to provide credit union news, governance services, discussion groups and other important information and member-services.
