Board and Management Policies
Michael Millis, Director, Educational Resources
CUNA Center for Professional Development

Directors are supposed to set policy. But as credit union business becomes more complex, the role of policies seems to become more obscure. Policy development is an important topic because the future belongs to those who prepare for it. Policies complement planning in that much of the plans eventually become part of policy statements. Policies guide the activities of the people who help make credit unions a success. During this session we will look at: What are policies? How do they help the credit union to succeed? Who writes them? And, What areas should policies address? $40 fee includes instruction, book, exam and light refreshments. Register for this class on the Registration Form.

From Satisfied Members to Raving Fans

Rick Olson, President
Rick Olson Seminars

Although Rick Olson speaks to all industries, he has developed a strong following in the credit union world. According to his philosophy, setting your service sights on satisfied members is just not good enough. The financial world is way too competitive. The focus needs to be on creating "Raving Fans". Discover how to make this happen during this challenging and exciting session.

The Seven Challenges Facing Lenders in the New Millennium

Dennis McQuistion, CSP
McQuistion and Associates

Loans are an important credit union service. In fact, lending has been called the engine that runs the credit union train. Credit Unions were created to provide members with loans at a reasonable cost. That concept has not changed. What has changed is the way in which lending is offered. Loan apps on the Web, telephone applications, buying and financing cars on-line along with members expectations of how long it takes to get a loan all affect the borrowers decision of where to shop. During this session, Dennis will address seven challenges facing us as lenders that we need to work into our lending process to remain competitive in the new millennium.

Taking Control of the ‘Virtual’ Point of Sale

Tom Farin, President,
Cyberspace Financial Services

Technology is changing the way people, corporations and financial institutions transact business. As the point of sale shifts from your credit union lobby to your members’ home, is your credit union prepared to take control of this new "virtual" point of sale? In this session, Tom Farin will discuss how you can develop services at your credit unions’ website that help your members buy a home or a car and even plan for retirement. The presentation will also include how to use your website as a source of fee income for non-traditional banking services and how to separate your credit unions home page from the websites of other financial institutions. Whether your credit union has a presence on the Internet or not, this program is packed full of interesting information that will help your credit union plan for the future.

The "Don’t Forget" Memory Workshop

David Lallier
The Don’t Forget Memory Workshop

Have you ever met someone a second time and the first thought on your mind is "What IS your name?" The basis of this workshop is member service. There is no greater compliment we can pay a member, potential member, or fellow member or volunteer than to call that person by name minutes, days and weeks after meeting them. Remembering the names of those with whom we do business will greatly enhance the reputation and business of that person. This workshop covers two areas.. We first deal with the issue of absent-mindedness, i.e. misplacing keys or that important document minutes before a critical meeting. The second segment teaches and practices the skills of effectively meeting people and remembering their names. This is a skill all of us need and only a few possess for our daily and professional lives.

Using The Media To Your Advantage

Bill Patterson, President,
Reputaion Management Associates

Bill Patterson, formerly the news director at Columbus’ top radio station and top executive at Ohio’s largest communications agency, is the founder of Reputation Management Associates. Patterson will show you how to portray your credit union in a favorable light in the news media under any circumstances, how to talk to reporters with confidence, and how to use the news media to market your services.

Special Small Credit Union Session
Innovative Services for Competitive Times

Ann Brinkerhoff, President
C.U.P. Federal Credit Union

These are competitive times. As fields of membership expand and overlap, the larger credit unions no longer have their own stable membership base. All around the country, smaller credit unions watch as larger ones put branch offices next door, across the street, or in the supermarket. These large credit unions can offer a full range of services that perhaps the smaller neighboring credit unions can’t. What’s a small credit union to do? The answer is easy. Offer what the big guys can’t. This sessions gives ideas from credit unions across the country of how to be competitive regardless of size.

Jeff Tobe, President

Plan to attend this session with an open mind and you’ll discover many new ways to "colorize" your marketing efforts! This session is a continuation of the Keynote address by Jeff Tobe where he will continue to talk about how to implement "Coloring Outside the Lines" thinking.

From the Cave to the Boardroom

Randy Harrington, President
Extreem Arts and Sciences

This session is designed to offer new ideas, insights and possibilities for incorporating the talent and wisdom of Information Service (IS) professionals in your strategic planning. The session begins with the assumption that technology represents one of the most important variables in determining your credit union’s efficiency, competitiveness and quality of service to your members. Unfortunately, many IS professionals speak "a different language" and they are unable or unwilling to communicate clearly in a strategic framework. With clear examples and proven techniques, you will learn to overcome the critical obstacles that keep you from making the most of the technological ideas the IS professional presents.

Discrimination/Harassment; and 5. Recent Lawsuits that affect all employers. You will be better informed and able to handle issues in these areas by attending this informative session.

Feeling Safe at Work

Auleen Jarret, BSN, President
Crime-Free Seminars

Recently a disgruntled customer walked into a state agency building with a loaded gun and began harassing people in one department. When people saw the gunman they scampered for a secure hiding place. Some went down the hall to hide in the credit union. The gunman didn’t follow but what if he had? Would you know what to do? We’ve heard the many stories of "going postal", bomb threats, shootings, etc. Your credit union is no safer than any other business unless you know the secrets of what to do to make yourself less of a target. This session will address those procedures to put in place to make you, your employees and your members feel safe at work.
