Television Interview Checklist

Preparation

·   Anticipate and rehearse difficult questions.  Organize your thoughts into brief answers.

·   Adjust your attitude. Be alert and friendly; bring enthusiasm and energy into the interview; avoid distractions.

·   Check your appearance.  Consider whether you will stand or be seated for an interview.  Adjust your clothing.

On Camera Techniques

·   Forget the camera.  Maintain eye contact with the interviewer, even during tough questions.  If more than one person is talking, remember the camera may be on you even though someone else is talking.

·   Keep your answers short.  Begin with the most important information.  Speak in substantive phrases of 10 to 30 seconds each, then stop.

·   Use simple, non-technical, easy-to-understand language.  If you must use a technical term, follow it with a phrase or example a layman will understand.

·   In multiple-part questions, answer the best or easiest question.  You’re under no obligation to answer several questions at once.

·   Do not answer hypothetical questions or speculate.  Say, “I cannot speculate on that.  What we know for fact is…”

·   For highly charged or negative questions, stay relaxed.  Do not repeat negative words.  Respond briefly, and quickly follow with something positive.

·   For time to think: pause, or restate the question or ask the interviewer to restate the question.  Then answer.

·   When you have said what needs to be said, stop.  If the interviewer waits for you to continue, remain silent and wait for the interviewer to ask another question.  Any dead time will not be used.
