Mergers: Essential Tool for Growth or Risk to the Movement?
Ohio credit unions are merging at a rate of 25-30 per year. In any merger consideration, the best interests of the members/owners should be the primary consideration. With that in mind, a merger can benefit members by increasing product and service offerings, and it can be a growth opportunity for both CUs. This session will examine trends in credit union mergers, the philosophy behind the mergers, and the end results.
Speaker: Dallas Bergl

Innovative Operational Models that Thrive and Survive
Unable to maintain a traditional "go it a alone" approach in the face of competitive pressures, shrinking interest margins and rising operational costs, a number of credit unions are evaluating their existing operating models and exploring outsourcing options. This session will review costs and benefits of outsourcing, models that are proving to be effective today, and challenges and risks.
Speaker: Mike Hales

Growth Strategies: A Look at Best Practices
Credit union growth strategies can take a myriad of forms, but at the root they all seek to increase wallet share and grow membership. This session explores successful growth strategies of progressive credit unions and provides examples that all credit unions can utilize.
Speaker: Tim Harrington

CEO Assessments: A Critical Board Responsibility
The CEO performance assessment is one of the most important -- yet avoided -- areas of a board's responsibilities. This presentation will highlight characteristics of a successful assessment process, common pitfalls, and best practices from credit unions.
Speaker: Michael Dougal

Attract and Retain Young Adults with Technology
The average age of a credit union member continues to increase, so credit unions must continuously seek new ways to attract young adults. The coveted 18-to-30 age group is computer savvy and dependent upon virtually every handheld technological device on the market. Learn how your credit union can use technology to capture the young adult market and make them lifelong members.
Speaker: Jeff Rendel

Building Relationships with Gen Y Members
Easy access to credit and overspending had undermined many young adults' credit records. This session will help you understand how Gen Y-ers got into trouble and how to help them improve their credit records for their prime borrowing years. Help Gen Y make the most of their financial resources by designing services that reflect the way they think and act. Opportunities for credit unions abound.
Speaker: Rich Jones

Assessing and Monitoring Your Board
A reflective self-assessment based on board competencies will direct your board to the training they need and establish a common language about expectations. This session defines criteria for measuring a board's effectiveness, outlines the benefits of a board self-assessment, and establishes guidelines for continuation of the assessment process.
Speaker: Tim Harrington

Beyond Compliance to Enterprise Risk Management
Broader than compliance, enterprise risk management (ERM) touches every aspect of a credit union. It is a governance process that encompasses risks associated with the balance sheet, as well as operational and technology risks. This session offers a high-level outline of ERM - discusses its opportunities and challenges, and how to conduct risk assessment at your CU.
Speaker: Joe Ghammashi

Trends in Generating Non-Interest Income
Net interest margins have eroded, forcing credit unions to turn to other sources of earnings. This session will examine credit union trends across the country and how non-interest income has become an essential tool for credit union earnings.
Speaker: Jared Cahill

The Opportunity of Peer-to-Peer Lending
The vast majority of today's loans rely on traditional financial services to complete the transaction. But a novel breed of lenders is making waves in the financial services industry by combining a blend of cutting-edge technology with the credit union ethos of pooling resources. Known as peer-to-peer (P2P) lending, the goal is to make borrowing and lending a more intimate business. Hear examples of how you can join the P2P lending revolution.
Speaker: Wade Lagrone

Directors as Political Advocates: An Essential Job Responsibility
Attacks from bankers that don't go away ... credit union conversions ... increasing regulatory scrutiny. Political activism on the part of all credit union leaders is more essential now than ever. This session focuses on the importance of credit union advocacy by all board members, CEOs and those in management positions, and how organized advocacy can and will protect and preserve the long-term viability of the CU Movement.
Speaker: Gretchen Drobnyk

Serving Low-Wealth Households: Opportunities for CUs
Payday lenders, rent-to-own stores, and pawn shops all cater to the financially vulnerable. Credit unions can and must offer a better option and be a solution for these consumers. This session details some of the programs being offered by CUs to serve low-wealth members and how the programs deepen credit unions' service to communities.
Speaker:  Nancy Pierce

The Art of Communication in Management
Increase your awareness of how non-verbal communication can either detract from or enhance your message during this session. You'll learn how to: gain and maintain credibility and the trust of your colleagues; structure a message to motivate; gain maximum effect and guarantee the listener "takes action"; and how to speak more effectively during impromptu situations.
Speaker: Jeff Rendel

Market Segmentation for Effective Loan Growth
Examine key borrowing segments, learn how to identify them, and anticipate demand for loans in the coming year. You will also learn how to match borrowers with the appropriate loan products, the best time to market various loan products, and the relationship between products and branch convenience.
Speaker: Bill Jordan

Responsibilities Directors Can't Delegate
With increased attention on credit union board members and the need for the entire board to be knowledgeable about regulations and risk management, accountability for directors also increases. Learn how you as a board member can avoid trouble by understanding the responsibilities that directors accept when they seek and are elected to the position.
Speaker: Chuck Wilson

The Board/CEO Relationship as a True Partnership
